THE WHAT? US manufacturing and chemical industry groups are hoping to block legislation that would usher in a federal drinking water standard. The National Association of Manufacturers and the American Chemistry Council have filed a lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency.
THE DETAILS According to a report published by Reuters, the petition brands the proposed standard ‘arbitrary, capricious and an abuse of discretion’ and that the EPA is operating outside of the authority granted to it under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act.
THE WHY? The EPA declined to comment when contacted by Reuters but the new rules are seeking to lower levels of PFAS in drinking water by setting a minimum standard for forever chemical content.
