L’Oréal launches into J-beauty with acquisition of Takami

THE WHAT? L’Oréal has announced that it has agreed to purchase J-beauty company Takami Co. The French beauty giant has renewed a long-term brand licensing agreement with Doctor Takami, owner of the eponymous derma-skin care brand, as well as a collaboration contract with the Takami clinics.

THE DETAILS The acquisition is slated to complete in ‘a few weeks’ and, while terms of the deal were not disclosed, the brand achieved revenue of approximately €50 million in 2019, and continued to deliver growth in 2020, despite tough market conditions.

“The Takami brand teams led by Mr. Okamura have been able to build a strong reputation in skincare expertise, a unique visual identity and a core group of loyal customers in Japan,” said Jérôme Bruhat, President of L’Oréal Japan. “These are the pillars of the brand’s success that we will grow further in the future.”

THE WHY? Cyril Chapuy, President of L’Oréal Luxe, comments on this acquisition: “We are very pleased to welcome the Takami brand into our portfolio. Its reputation in Asia matches the remarkable quality of its products. Its expertise in prestigious beauty treatments and its omnichannel distribution make it a very complementary brand within L’Oréal Luxe.”
