Inolex granted European patent for safe, sustainable preservation technology
And introduces Spectrastat™ CHA, a 100% natural Caprylhydroxamic Acid in powder form
PHILADELPHIA PA, April 12, 2024 — European Patent EP3075401B1
Inolex is building on its safe and sustainable preservation platform with a newly issued European patent EP3075401B1 which is directed to paraben-free multifunctional compositions for topical cosmetic, toiletry, and pharmaceutical formulations that require Caprylhydroxamic Acid and a vicinal diol, as well as methods of using the compositions to protect against microbiological growth.
Inolex aalso announces the addition of Spectrastat™ CHA, a 100% natural, non-palm derived chelating agent in powder form, to its line of Spectrastat™ preservation products.
When designing preservation systems with Caprylhydroxamic Acid (CHA), pairing it with a vicinal diol, commonly referred to as a Medium Chain Terminal Diol (MCTD), is critical for effective product protection. A variety of MCTDs can be used to accomplish effective preservation when combined with CHA, including Caprylyl Glycol, Glyceryl Caprylate, and Caprylyl Glyceryl Ether. This combination of materials and the resulting effective preservation of cosmetic products is described in Inolex’s newly granted patent. The optimized combinations are the foundation of Inolex’s broad spectrum preservation systems offered under the Spectrastat™ tradename.
“Inolex’s safe preservation technology combines multiple techniques to create an environment that is inhospitable to microbial growth, known as the hurdle technology approach,” explains Michael J. Fevola, PhD, VP R&D at Inolex. “Hurdle technology is an intelligent combination of different preservation factors or techniques (“hurdles”) to achieve broad spectrum and reliable preservation effects.”
Combining Spectrastat™ CHA with an MCTD creates a highly effective hurdle technology ingredient combination that provides broad spectrum microbial growth protection over a wide pH range in cosmetic formulations.
Inolex is introducing Spectrastat™ CHA, a 100% natural, coconut derived organic acid and chelating agent, as a stand-alone component to provide maximum flexibility. For microbiologists and formulators who prefer to work with individual ingredients when designing their preservation systems, Spectrastat™ CHA offers a sustainably derived source of Caprylhydroxamic Acid that remains effective at neutral pH and prevents the growth of yeast and mold in formulations. It’s backed by Inolex’s high quality standards and the company’s extensive portfolio of safety testing validated by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel.
“Our broad portfolio of safe, sustainable preservation technology includes individual multifunctional components and complete broad spectrum systems so brands can choose their approach to preservation,” says Fevola.
• Formulators who prefer to work with pre-optimized combinations or prefer to simplify supply chain complexity by purchasing just one product, can choose from Inolex’s broader range of Spectrastat™ products. The Spectrastat™ line combines CHA and MCTDs in optimized ratios for the best preservation efficacy plus added carriers for ease of formulation.
• Formulators who prefer to work with individual ingredients to create their own combinations can choose to combine Spectrastat™ CHA with an MCTD from Inolex’s Lexgard® line to achieve broad spectrum preservation efficacy. The Lexgard® range of ingredients provides additional benefits depending on formulation needs.
“Our patented compositions and methods yield a versatile ingredient platform which gives formulators optionality when developing their optimal preservation system for consumer products,” says Fevola. “We are taking the guess work out of advanced preservation by giving formulators an entire technology platform and full flexibility to meet their individual needs.”
